Course Overview

This course will introduce the development of a newspaper from writing drafts to final publication.  Students will learn how to write news, opinion, feature, editorials, sports and other formats in the AP style.  Students will be exposed to all areas of newspaper production and work with InDesign, Photoshop and Word.  

Grading Policy

Students will be required to keep a quarterly portfolio of weekly assignments that will be graded at the end of the quarter.  The weekly assignment will consist of articles written during the week utilizing lessons taught during that week.  Tests will be given with a one week notice and a semester exam.

Attendance

Students are responsible for all work when they are absent including deadlines.  Missed tests will be taken the day students come back unless other arrangements have been made with the instructor.

Behavior

Students are to be seated and ready to begin work t the bell.  Mocking or teasing of another student will not be tolerated.

Course Overview

This writing intensive course will focus on the publication of The Ryan Review, Archbishop Ryan’s student paper.  Students will be responsible for managing, editing and the production of the paper.  Students will use Word, Adobe InDesign and Photoshop, industry standard computer applications, for publication.  Ethics, responsibility and the role of the press will provide the foundation of publishing a superior high school newspaper.  

Grading Policy

Students will be graded on many facets of publication: deadlines, writing, use of technology, responsibility and publication.  Projects will be given throughout the year to allow students to display individual achievement.
